As a software professional, I know our minds rarely stop. After a long day fighting Flutter’s exit code 69 or debugging global elements in Divi, the brain begs for a “hard reset.”
Many people make the mistake of seeking relaxation on social media, but that only amplifies the digital noise. I prefer analog leisure. Here are my 5 personal recommendations to lower your heart rate, connect with others, and give your eyes a much-needed break from the blue light of screens. This list consists of games I have thoroughly tested and played enough to recommend.
Undoubtedly, enduring those unexpected victories from our significant other will strengthen our patience.
1. Ouch!: Simplicity that Bridges Generations
This is the perfect game for when mental fatigue is high. It is so easy to explain that my daughter learned to play it at just 3 years old.
-
Why it relaxes: It strikes a flawless balance between minimal strategy and pure luck. There is nothing more satisfying (and endearing) than watching a child grasp the mechanics and say “Ouch!” when they get pricked by a cactus. It’s ideal for socializing without any pressure.
2. Star Realms: Strategy with a Space Rhythm
If you love planning ahead but don’t want to spend hours staring at a board, this is your game. It is a deck-building game that allows for fierce competition but moves at a pace that lets you strategize while the other person takes their turn.
-
My golden rule: Even though it has a mobile version, I refuse to use it. The goal here is to step away from smartphone addiction and enjoy the tactile feel of physical cards during those 20-minute matches.
3. Azul Mini: Hypnotic Patterns
I’ll admit something: this game stresses me out a little because I almost never win! However, it is fascinating to watch how much it relaxes everyone else.
-
The appeal: Visually, it is an absolute gem. Watching the tile patterns slowly come together has a powerful aesthetic component. It is a clean, organized game—something that naturally attracts those of us with a structured, analytical mind, even if we lose.
4. Catan: The Ultimate Unplug (With a Time Provision)
Catan is a special case. A match can easily last over an hour, so the trick is not to be in a rush.
-
The key: If you set aside the right amount of time, it becomes a journey. Watching your settlements grow and trading resources with friends provides a total “unplug” from the outside world. That said, if you try to play it with one eye on the clock, relaxation quickly turns into stress. Give it its proper space!
5. Carcassonne: Dopamine in Every Tile
My absolute favorite for quiet evenings. If you pair the game with the right soundtrack (some lo-fi beats or ambient medieval music), the experience becomes almost meditative.
-
The feeling: Placing a tile and claiming a monastery or completing a massive fortress generates steady, minor doses of dopamine. It is pure construction without the chaos of destruction, which feels highly therapeutic.
What about you? What is your preferred method to shut down the code and switch on the fun?
Peace and wellness!
A Note on the “Hype Effect”
I have intentionally excluded games like Virus. While it is incredibly fun, it triggers a state of alertness and an adrenaline rush that, while not inherently stressful, keeps us way too active. To combat burnout, we want to lower our heart rate, not raise it (an experiment I will soon measure with my smartwatch to share with you all).
